Overview
من المعروف أن بوادر الاتصال بين العرب وساحل الشرقي لإفريقية يعود إلى فترة غائرة في القدم، وعند ظهور الإسلام وانتشاره غذى هذه العلاقات والهجرات إلى تلك الديار. لعبت الأحداث في بلاد الحجاز وخاصة السياسية منها دوراً في استمرار الهجرات إلى الساحل الشرقي لإفريقيا، واستوطنوا واستقر بهم الحال، وما أن حل القرن السابع الهجري حتى استطاع هؤلاء المهاجرين من تكوين إمارات وممالك إسلامية في بلاد الزيلع، غرفت عند مؤرخين تلك الفترة بممالك الطراز، فهي على حافة البحر كطراز له، ولكن محور بحثي عن الدور الريادي لهذه الممالك المتمثل في الجهاد ضد نصاري الأحباش، والمحافظة على نشر الدين الإسلامي والصراع من أجل البقاء والمحافظة على الوجود الإسلامي في تلك البقعة من الأرض.
