إن إفريقيا جنوب الصحراء تُعد المنطقة الوحيدة في العالم التي تنامى فيها عدد الذين يعيشون في فقر مدقع على مدار العقدين الماضيين. - أن معدل الذين يعيشون في فقر مدقع في المنطقة ارتفع بنسبة 42%، حتى وصل إلى 47% في الفترة من 1981 إلى 2001. - أن الفقر المدقع انخفض في العالم كله من 40% إلى 21%.
