عني شعراء التيار السودانوي بإبراز ملامح الشخصية السودانية التي تميزها عن غيرها، وعدوها من أهم المحاور التي يدور حولها شعرهم، ولذا فقد استوحوا منها كثيرا من معانيهم وصورهم الشعرية، فقد تعددت تلك الملامح والمظاهر المميزة للشخصية السودانية، فمنها العرقية والجسمانية، متمثلة في اللون والقبيلة، وما يميز الرجل، وكذلك ما يميز المرأة وما تتزين به في ذلك المجتمع، وكما وقفوا على الملامح الاجتماعية وما تتمثل فيه من عادات وتقاليد، منها ما هو حسن وحميد، ومنها المنبوذ.
