Overview

ABSTRACT The main goal of this paper is to expound Francisco de Vitoria's doctrine about papal power, a topic not much discussed in the literature on Vitoria. The methodology has been the systematization of what Vitoria expounded in different works, especially in his Relections on the power of the Church, in the light of his more general political doctrines and of the differentiation, of Thomistic roots, between two types of communities, the natural and the supernatural, on the base of the two ends of man. The main conclusion of this work is that, on the one hand, Vitoria severely limits papal power in relation to previous authors and, on the other hand, he still acknowledges some residual papal temporal power, the indirect power. Sin embargo, parte de esta potestad sí puede tener su origen en el derecho natural o el positivo, en cuanto, incluso si no hay revelación, el ser humano se encuentra obligado a dar culto a Dios, y para ello debe instituir una potestad especial diversa de la política18, aun cuando dicha potestad espiritual, presente en los paganos y ejercida por sus sacerdotes y pontífices, no genere los efectos espirituales propios de la potestad espiritual establecida por Dios19. Sin embargo, el fin de la potestad espiritual excede largamente el fin de la potestad temporal, en tanto que la beatitud y felicidad perfecta excede a la felicidad humana y terrena\"21.
