Overview
This dissertation explores the ways that female stand-up comedians maintain economic stability and also perform abject material and abject personas to destabilize dominant or normative definitions of women. The term “revolution” in the title speaks to my argument that revolutionary performances by women are taking place on many stand-up stages, where comedians are free from set form or set scripts and can experiment as they please. The disciplines of Performance Studies, Women's Studies, and Transnational Studies have been essential to the investigation of these performances. My approach examines the performances by women in Sweden and the U.S., exploring how both nations have vastly differing structures of government (for example, the vastly different approaches to immigration and social welfare). The recent explosion or “revolution” in Stand-up Comedy in Sweden offers a more diverse palette of comedians, particularly for female political refugees who speak to issues of transnational identification. Ultimately, this dissertation seeks to explore the moments when comedy by women tampers with systems of regulation, as well as when comedy reinforces normative behavior as a “corrective social function” (Henri Bergson). An analysis of these performances by women of diverse backgrounds offers valuable strategies for future feminist interventions in both pedagogy and performance studies.
