Overview
Tomorrow's joint meeting of the Australian and New Zealand cabinets in Sydney recalls a time, back in 1840, when New Zealand was briefly a dependency of NSW. It also raises the question, last canvassed by an Australian parliamentary committee in 2006, of whether the two countries should become one. What happened almost 170 years ago helps to provide an answer.
