يبين كتاب \"نصوص أدبية من أوجاريت\" لمؤلفه الدكتور علي أبو عساف، أن العلماء انكبوا على دراسة النصوص الأوجاريتية، فوجدوا أنها دينية، أدبية وشعرية، كنعانية الأصل والمنشأ، واختلفوا في تفسير الكثير من معانيها ومفرداتها، وفي تحديد صيغتها الصرفية، والآن وبعد مرور أكثر من خمسين عاما، لا نزال كما يوضح الكاتب، بحاجة إلى المزيد من البحث في معاني الكثير من مفرداتها وجملها، لذلك اعتمد في كتابه على النصوص الأصلية، ليقدم لنا دراسة تساعد على إجلاء معنى كثير من المفردات، حيث يلفت المؤلف بداية، إلى أنه تقع مدينة أوجاريت قرب شاطئ البحر المتوسط، شمال مدينة اللاذقية، وكانت إحدى كبريات مدن المشرق العربي في العصور القديمة، وكانت لها صلات وثيقة مع المصريين، تدل على علاقات صداقة بين حكام أجاريت وحكام مصر، وعلاقتها بالدول الكنعانية في الداخل لا تزال سرا مجهولا.
