يروي كتاب «أوغاريت» لمؤلفه قصي عبد الرحمن قصة اكتشاف هذا الموقع الأثري على مقربة من خليج (مينة البيضا) على الساحل السوري شمالي مدينة اللاذقية، على بعد 11 كم عنها عندما كان أحد الفلاحين ويدعى محمود منلا الملقب بالزير يحرث أرضه في شهر إبريل من عام 1928، اصطدم محراثه بشيء صلب في بطن الأرض.
