يشكو كثيرون من عدم وجود كتاب يضم بين دفتيه تاريخ سورية الحديث، من ثورة الشريف حسين الى عهد البعث يسرد بدقة وقائع هذه الفترة بوجهيها الأبيض والأسود، وإن كنا لا ننكر ونتجاهل الدراسات التي تناولت مراحل معينة من هذا التاريخ. واستدراكا لهذا النقص قررنا المجازفة وأعددنا هذا الكتاب معتمدين على مصادرنا العديدة وأهمها الصحف التي صدرت في سورية ولبنان ومصر، مذكرات رجال السياسة وبعض ضباط الجيش، نشرات الأحزاب السياسية، البلاغات الرسمية، الكتب والدراسات التي تناولت بعض جوانب تاريخ سورية. ومع وجود هذه المصادر كلها وغيرها في أرشيفنا، لم يكن الأمر هينا علينا بسبب التناقض في الروايات والتضارب في التواريخ، فكان للمقارنة والاجتهاد مجال في هذه النقاط. وسيفاجأ القارئ بأن تاريخ سورية منذ العهد الفيصلي إلى اليوم رسم خريطته سياسيون وضباط لا يتجاوز عددهم أصابع اليدين، تدور حولهم الشبهات وتتوجه إليهم التهم بالعمالة الأجنبية.
