الكتاب محاولة لإيجاد تفسيرات وتحليلات الأسباب ونتائج ظاهرة الانقلابات العسكرية في سورية التي شهدت ستة وعشرين انقلابا ومحاولة الانقلاب في المدة، 1971 وقد أثارت هذه الظاهرة انتباه رجال السياسة والتاريخ لما سببته من عدم استقرار سياسي وصراعات حزبية وقبلية وطائفية والتي جعلت من الجيش وهو المؤسسية الأكثر تنظيما قادرا على الاستيلاء على السلطة في الوقت الذي كان يريد قادته ذلك ونتيجة لتلك الانقلابات تسقط نخبة إلى قمة الهرم السياسي لتتربع عليه مدة من الزمن لثاني أخرى وتزيحها وتستولي الحكم، وهذا ما جعل سورية ساحة للصراع الإقليمي والدولي وضحية لمؤامرات كانت تسعى لضمها إلى أحلاف عسكرية وسياسية في ظل تصاعد الحرب الباردة بين الولايات المتحدة والاتحاد السوفيتي.
