إن هدف هذا الكتاب هو توضيح طبيعة علم تصنيف النبات في لغة سهلة، موضحا، متى ما كان ذلك ممكنا، أمثلة بينها، ولكن بلا افتراض مسبق لأي معرفة بالتقسيم. إن هذا الكتاب صمم لعرض التصنيف كعلم معاصر يصف الطموحات الجارية للمصنفين والمبادئ والوسائل التي تكون الخلفية لذلك. يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ثلاثة أقسام هي القسم الأول : نوقش فيه أسس تصنيف النبات ومراحل نموه، والقسم الثاني : يتعرض بشيء من التفصيل إلى مصادر المعلومات التصنيفية من فروع علم النبات الأخرى، والقسم الثالث : من هذا الكتاب يتناول جوانب التطبيق العلمي للتصنيف.
