يعرض المؤلف في \"النبي الأعزل\" حياة تروتسكي وأعماله من عام 1921 وحتى عام 1929 عندما غادر تروتسكي الاتحاد السوفياتي منفيا. وهو في هذا الكتاب يروي قصة تشكل الاتحاد السوفياتي، وحين كان تروتسكي متربعا على قمة السلطة وقد استعان الكاتب على ذلك بمحفوظات تروتسكي وأشخاص آخرين، إضافة إلى ذكرياته الشخصية وبعض الأصدقاء الذين كانوا على صلة به. ويشير الكاتب في الصفحات الأولى من الكتاب أن الديكتاتورية البروليتارية كانت ظافرة بعد الثورة، لكنها اختفت تماما تقريبا، وأدى تشتت الطبقة العاملة القديمة إلى ظهور فراع في روسيا المدينية إذ لم تعد الطبقة العاملة سوى صدفة فارغة.
