تعد (الإلياذة) أحد أعظم ملاحم الأدب الغربي الكلاسيكي، حيث أرسى بها (هوميروس) أسس الشعر الملحمي شكلا ومضمونا وتمثل الإلياذة الرؤية الملحمية الشعرية لحرب طروادة وهي حرب نشبت بين اليونانيين والطرواديين مدة عشر سنوات وتعد ترجمة سليمان البستاني-بلا شك-من أعظم الترجمات الشعرية العربية للإلياذة، حيث تعتبر بحق عملا أدبيا راقيا يحاكي ملحمة هوميروس في الأوزان والأسلوب واللغة والأجواء وقد زود البستاني هذه الترجمة العبقرية بشروح تاريخية وأدبية مسهبة على المتن.
