هناك أربعة نصوص في التراث العربي القديم لقصة حي بن يقظان كتبها بهذا العنوان كل من ابن سينا وابن طفيل وكتبها علاء الدين (ابن النفيس) بعنوان فاضل بن ناطق وكتبها شهاب الدين السهروردي بعنوان رسالة الغربة الغربية وتمثل النصوص الاربعة حلقات متواليه من الابداع الفلسفي والادبي الممتد عبر تاريخ الحضارة الاسلامية ويلاحظ أن النصوص احتوت أيضا إلى جانب التصوف على العديد من جوانب العلم العربي مثل نظرية النشوء والارتقاء في قصتي ابن طفيل وابن النفيس واكتشاف الدورة الدموية في قصة العلاء ابن النفيس.
