يتحدث الكتاب عن أسطورة عربية تحكي قصة شخص يدعى حي بن يقظان نشأ في جزيرة وحده وترمز للإنسان وعلاقته بالكون والدين كما تحتوي على العديد من القصص والأساطير الفرعية، ويتضمن الكتاب عناصر الثقل المعرفي الأساسية والممثلة في (الإله/الإنسان/الطبيعة) كما يتطرق إلى أبعاد العلاقة بين هذا العناصر فهو يحكي قصة إنسان استقر به الحال وهو بعد طفل على أرض لا إنسان فيها، فاتخذ من الحيوان مرضعا له، والطبيعة مأوى له، فافترش الأرض والتحف السماء، ولما كبر واتشد عوده ونضج فكرة إنصرف إلى التأمل في الكون، وهو الأمر الذي قاده إلى حتمية وجود خالق لهذا الكون.
