في هذا الكتاب يحاول \"وليد علاء الدين\" القيام بالدور الأصيل للأديب المثقف، الذي يجب أن ينشغل بالشأن العام مثله مثل رجل السياسة والدين ورجل العلم الكتاب عبارة عن مقالات للكاتب حاول فيها أن يضع يده على أكثر القضايا حساسية في المجتمع المصري خلال سنة ثورة يناير، وعيا من بأهمية دور المثقف التقليدي في المجتمع، وقد كان واضحا في مقدمة الكتاب هذا الأمر قائلا: \"بعد هذه الثورة، شعرت وغيري كثيرون، أن مصر في حاجة إلى كل فعل مخلص مهما بدا صغيرا، وإلى كل كلمة صادقة ربما أنارت عتمة أو أشارت إلى ما تعده خللا أو حققت ما تراه أملًا\".
