تناول الكاتب في كتابه بعض ما مر به من حوادث وأخبار عن إتلاف الكتب في التراث العربي قصرها الكاتب على نوعين من الإتلاف النوع الأول هو إتلاف السلطة للكتاب وتتجلى السلطة هنا بجميع أنماطها وتحليلاتها سواء كانت هذه السلطة تتمثل بسلطة الحاكم أو المجتمع أو الفرد أو تتمثل بسلطة الأيديولوجيا أو العادات والتقاليد وكان لها دور في إتلاف الكتاب ومطاردته ونفيه والنوع الثاني الإتلاف الشخصي للكتب ويتمثل بالإتلاف لأسباب علمية أو اعتقادية أو نفسية وهو كثير في تراثنا العربي والإسلامي.
