تتناول الرواية قصة شجرة الدر كأول ملكة تتولى الحكم في تاريخ مصر الإسلامية حيث قدرت لها الأقدار أن تتوج ملكة على مصر بعد مقتل الملك \"طوران شاه\" آخر سلاطين الدولة الأيوبية، وقد تزامن توليها للحكم مع أحداث تراجيدية شهدها الواقع السياسي الإسلامي على المستوى الدولي في ذلك الوقت حيث سقطت الخلافة العباسية باجتياح التتار لبغداد التي ظلت مركزا للخلافة طيلة خمسمائة عام، وانتقال بعدها مقر الخلافة إلى مصر كما تزامنت فترة توليها الحكم مع مجئ ملك فرنسا لويس التاسع بنفسه على رأس الجيوش الصليبية للقضاء على مصر بوصفها أقوى دولة إسلامية في ذلك الوقت ورغم كل هذه التحديات التي فرضها الواقع الدولي استطاعت شجرة الدر أن تدير شئون البلاد بكفاءة واقتدار.
