شجرة الدر هي عصمة الدين ؛ أم خليل وهي أرمنية من أصل تركي وأيضا جارية اشتراها السلطان صالح نجم الدين أيوب، وقد افتتن السلطان بجمالها وذكاها وحظيت عنده بمكانة مرموقة حتى أعتقها وتزوجها وأنجبت منه أبنها خليل، الذي توفي في الثاني من صفر لعام 648 هـ. ولدت شجرة الدر مسيحية في تركيا في أرمينيا الجبلية، إلا أن القاهرة كانت وطنها والإسلام هو عقيدتها، وقد اختطتف شجرة الدر وبيعت في سوق النخاسة.
