تتناول هذه المسرحية تاريخ شجرة الدر منذ دخلت قصر الأمير نجم الدين الأيوبي-حاكم حصن كيفا بأعالي الفرات-إلى أن أصبحت زوجة لهذا الأمير، ثم ملكة، بعد أن تم لزوجها الأمير-بفضل دهائها وحكمتها-الاستيلاء على عرش مصر والتخلص من أخيه العادل سيف الدين، الذي كان أبوهما الكامل محمد قد آثره بالملك دون أخيه الأكبر الأمير نجم الدين، ثم وفاة الملك الصالح وزواج شجرة الدر من المملوك أيبك، الذي أصبح يعرف باسم المعز عز الدين أيبك والذي اشترك في الحكم مع شجرة الدر حتى حدثته نفسه بأن ينفرد بالملك دونها وأن يعزز ملكه بالزواج من أميرتين من سلالة الأيوبيين، فتآمرت عليه شجرة الدر وأمرت غلمانها بأن يقتلوه بالقباقيب وهو في الحمام.
