لقد عرف النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن اسم المرء مفتاح شخصيته وأنه الطريق إلى قلبه، فدعا إلى تحسين الأسماء وتزيينها بالألقاب الطيبة والكنى الحسنة، وحذر من التنابز بالألقاب، ومن أجل ذلك غير النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أسماء بعض أصحابه التي لا تتفق وجمال الإسلام وجلاله ومثله، وخلع على بعضهم الكنى التي ترفع من قدرهم، ولقبهم بالألقاب التي تشرفهم.
