في كتابه التراث في جيرود الصادر عن الهيئة العامة السورية للكتاب يبدأ محمود محفوظ سمور بتعريف مصطلحاته التي يتناولها كثيرا بين صفحات الكتاب فيقول إن التراث الشعبي هو المأثورات المادية والروحية الشعبية المتوارثة بشكل مستمر من السلف إلى الخلف وهو موروث جمعي يتعلق بالبشر وطرق اتصالهم ببعضهم، وتبدأ فصول الكتاب بالحديث عن المساكن القديمة من حيث مواصفاتها وخصائصها في مدينة جيرود الواقعة في جبال القلمون بريف دمشق حيث يصف هذه المباني بأنها تتوضع على الضفة اليمنى لقناة جيرود العامة حيث كان الناس دائماً يفضلون القرب من القناة من أجل الحصول على المياه.
