قد كتب في أخبار المعري وآثاره كثير من الكتاب على توالي العصور، واختلف في أمره الباحثون والناقدون، على أنه لم يظهر إلى يوم الناس هذا كتاب جامع لذلك كله يتسم بالنصفة، ويتصف بالاستقصاء، ويزن ما قال المعري وما قيل فيه بالقسطاس المستقيم مثل هذا الكتاب الذي ألفه الأستاذ سليم الجندي، فقد قضى في تصنيفه سنين طوالا، وتوفي بعد أن فرغ أو كاد من تبيضه، ولم يقيض له الأجل أن يدفعه إلى الطبع، لذلك، عمد الأستاذ عبد الهادي هاشم إلى تحقيق هذا الكتاب، وضبط شواهده، والتعليق عليه، وذلك خدمة للباحثين والدارسين.
