كتاب زينة الدهر للحظيري هو الحلقة المهمة المفقودة في سلسلة ذيول كتاب يتيمة الدهر للثعالبي وهو الرابط الذي ذيل به الحظيري كتاب دمية القصر للباخزري ليربط طرفة الآخر بكتاب خريدة القصر للعماد الأصفهاني، قسم الباخرزي شعراء عصره إلى طبقتين حسب مقياس الفحولة كما اعتمد على التوزيع الجغرافي في ذكر الشعراء فترجم لثمانية وخمسين شاعرا من شعراء العراق وستة عشر شاعرا من بلاد الشام وعشرة شعراء من خراسان وأربعة شعراء من فارس وثلاثة شعراء من أصفهان وشاعرين من المغرب وشاعر من مصر فكان المجموع أربعة وتسعين شاعرا، يشكل هذا الكتاب إضافة كبيرة إلى حركة التأليف حول تراجم الشعراء في العصر العباسي وهو مكمل لأهم كتاب تراجم الشعراء المعروفة فيه للثعالبي والباخرزي والعماد الأصفهاني وغيرهم.
