وردت المقامة في مدلولها اللغوي في عصر ما قبل الإسلام دالة على معنى مجلس القبيلة وناديها، مستدلين بذلك ببيت زهير بن أبي سلمى: وفيهم مقامات حسان وجوههم... وأندية ينتابها القول والفعل. كما دلت على معنى الجماعة المجتمعين في مكان ما : كالنادي أو المجلس والشاهد على ذلك بيت لعبيد : ومقامة غلب الرقاب كأنهم... حين لدى باب الحصير قيام. ويبدو أن هذه الدلالات غلب عليها معان ذات صيغة اصطلاحية. وفي العصر الأموي دلت على الموقف الذي يقف فيه من يروم الوعظ بين يدي الخليفة أو ما دونه من أصحاب المنزلة والأمر؛ حتى بلغ التطور في معناها فأصبحت تدل على المحاضرة التي تلقى في جمع من الناس في موضوع ما.
