ينتمي الكتاب إلى السيرة الذاتية لعبد القادر الشاوي، ابتداء من طفولته والمتاهات التي عاشها بين أحضان الحياة وفي غياهب السجون، وصولا إلى أبرز تجاربه مع الكتابة وهويته النقدية، وعلاوة على مكان ولادة الشاوي في قرية \"باب تازة\"، ومراحل طفولته وذكرياته، يقدم الكتاب في محصلته مادة وثائقية مهمة من مساره النضالي في صفوف اليسار المغربي، متمثلة في اعتقال وسجن الشاوي الذي امتد على خمس عشرة سنة، وليس الكتاب، الذي يندرج ضمن جنس كتابات السير الذاتية، وتحديدا عوالم \"التخييل الذاتي\"، سردا فقط لأحداث الحياة نفسها، إنما هو \"محاولة صناعة تلك الذكريات، بهندسة جديدة لرؤية الماضي من زاوية الشعور أو الإحساس بزوال أو ذهاب تلك الذكريات\"، كما وصفها الشاوي نفسه.
