لقد مثل الشعر الجاهلي باكورة نتاج العقل العربي، وانبرى شعراء هذا العصر في قصائدهم يمثلون األوان الحياة العربية مستمدين إياها من بيئتهم البدوية، فكان الشاعر الجاهلي ينظر إلى الصحراء وما يحيط بها من كثبان ووديان متأملا ذلك كله بعقل ثاقب وإحساس مرهف فسطر لنا أعذب الأشعار التي خلدت على مدى التاريخ، فصارت مثالا لكل الاشعار التي تلتها، فجلس أمامها النقاد ينظرون إلى سر الإبداع فيها، وإلى هذا التميز الذي تفردت به، ومن هم أصحابها، وكان أن اشتهر من هؤلاء الشعراء نخبة لمعت اسماؤهم، فكانوا بإجماع العلماء والنقاد في المرتبة الأولى، وشاعرنا الأعشى واحد من هؤلاء.
