تنبع أهمية الكتاب أولا من محاولته تأكيد العلاقة الوثيقة بين العلوم والإنسانيات ومن أهمية التخصصات التي يقوم عليها والعلوم التي يتطرق إليها ويقدم الكتاب عرضا كاملا لأحدث التأملات في النشاط العلمي وأن كان تاريخ العلوم قد سار على إيقاع انهيار النماذج والقطيعات الجذرية والاكتشافات الثورية فإن القسم الأول من هذا الكتاب يوضح أيضا أنه يمكن تعريف هذا التاريخ عبر بعض الاستمرارية وأما القسم الثاني من الكتاب فيشير إلى ظهور تأمل فلسفي واجتماعي واكب تكون التخصصات وكان يهدف إلى فهم نوعية المنهج العلمي وتطوره ويصل القارئ مع القسم الثالث من الكتاب إلى القرن العشرين الذي كان قرن زوال الأوهام.
