إن هذه الرواية هي عبارة عن تقرير حول التقرير المرفوع إلى السلطان تعيد رسم ملامح أحد الوجوه المثيرة والمؤثرة في التاريخ السياسي للبلاد، حيث في سنة 1591، أرسل السلطان المنصور الذهبي جيشا إلى جنوب الصحراء بهدف إلحاق مملكة السونغاي القديمة بربوع بلاد المغرب، كانت تبدو أن هناك إمبراطورية قيد التكون غرب العالم الإسلامي، عين جودر على رأس قوة عسكرية مذهلة تم بناؤها لهذا الغرض. وبعد تحقيق النصر برز جودر بطلا، لكنه بدا أيضا مترددا ومرتبكا في تدبير هذا الانتصار. و ستحط بين يدي السلطان تقارير مقلقة حول الانحرافات الجسيمة لجودر، فقرر السلطان إرسال الراوي، وهو أحد موظفي الدولة، وممثل لجوهر المخزن من أجل إنجاز تقرير حول كل المشاريع والبحث في المآل الذي آل إليه القائد جودر.
