Teenage boy killed in crash on wintry motorway
Northern Gas Networks has restored supplies to homes and businesses in the Shaw Cross and Hanging Heaton areas of Dewsbury and Batley in West Yorkshire, where 450 properties were affected when water flooded a gas main on New Year's Eve. As a safety precaution, 1,400 properties are being visited and checked. Northern Gas Networks' communication director John O'Grady said: \"In the meantime, I would urge customers not to attempt to re-connect their own gas supply as this can be dangerous.\" Trains on the government-run East Coast line between Yorkshire and London were so badly delayed that the route was removed from the National Rail website, adding to confusion for passengers - who were told only that a \"reduced service\" was operating. Many trains between Leeds and the capital were cancelled altogether.
Worst weather of winter after eight inches of snow falls onto icy roads
In the morning rush hour a crane and bus came to a halt in slippery conditions on the A61 at the bottom of Almsford Bank on the southern approach to Harrogate and two gritters had to be sent to deal with the incident. Meanwhile North Yorkshire Police have warned drivers not to leave their vehicle unattended while they run the engine to defrost the windscreen. This follows the theft of vehicles in Thirsk and Littlethorpe, near Ripon, yesterday. Police believe opportunist thieves took a red Ford Fiesta in Thirsk, which was last seen heading towards Busby Stoop at just after 8am. The vehicle stolen from Littlethorpe was a blue Isuzu Trooper. It was last seen heading towards Ripon at 10am.
Heroin dealers jailed after two-year inquiry
Alfred Dear, 36, of James Street, York, and Tommy Lee Tunney, 27, of Outgang Lane, Osbaldwick, York, were each sentenced to seven years for the supply of heroin, the joint supply of heroin and possession of heroin with the intent to supply. In May 2008 police recovered 60 grams of heroin from a stash near the same caravan site. The find resulted in Dear and Tunney changing their methods of drug dealing, prompting the investigation team to regroup. \"The fact that no evidence has been discovered nor offered by the defence that either Dear or Tunney were users of the drug, gives a clear indication of their approach to dealing heroin.
Thirsty work for the tea tasters of Harrogate
Sip, slurp, swill, spit is the routine for Mrs [KATE Roch], who is one of a small team of tea buyers at Taylors of Harrogate - the home of Yorkshire Tea. White tea is steamed straight after picking to de-enzyme the leaves to prevent fermentation. White tea is claimed to contain three times as many polyphenols - the antioxidant chemicals that neutralise toxins - as green tea. Mrs Roch, 37, who has been in the tea business for 15 years, said: \"No day is the same. I can be tasting teas, giving a talk on tea or riding

St Thomas A Becket Walk in Hampsthwaite at Pounds 588,408 offers all the attractions of a picturesque Nidderdale village and close proximity to Harrogate. Back in Harrogate, The Oval averages Pounds 586,200 and currently has the opportunity to purchase a small grassed area with trees, which must stay as public amenity land. More than 20 people have expressed interest at Pounds 10,000. 'Pay more but see more' ploy by Minster
As before, York residents can enter the Minster free of change by obtaining a Minster card. Proof of address helps staff issue them quickly and they can be used for as many visits as anyone wants in a year. The Dean, the Very Reverend Keith Jones, said: \"Everyone wants York Minster to pay its way. If we could maintain and run York Minster on voluntary donations we would. When we did try, until 2002, to survive on voluntary donations, we realized we could not.

It gives visitors information on the history of the Abbey. The RIBA White Rose Awards celebrate design excellence in architecture and the built environment in the Yorkshire region.
County council getting ready to tackle climate change
\"We are working hard to ensure that schools continue to use energy in the most efficient way possible. For example, the new Richmond School is a national demonstration project for sustainability, which incorporates a range of environmental features designed to reduce the school's carbon emissions, including the use of renewable energy such as biomass.\" \"We have already introduced a hugely popular scheme in North Yorkshire libraries, in which people can borrow energy consumption monitors free of charge to help them work out how they can cut their electricity bills. As well as reducing carbon emissions in the generation of electricity, they'll also be helping themselves by saving money.\"

Pilgrims follow in monks' footsteps
After Holy Communion, they and around 350 walkers set off from the West Door of Ripon Cathedral to walk the four miles to the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey in the valley of the River Skell to the west of the city. It was the route taken by a small group of monks from St Mary's Abbey in York, who stayed overnight in Ripon at Christmas 1132, before making the journey that ended with the foundation of Fountains Abbey.
