IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: BRASS MONKEY, Raising a pint to conversing
2004
[Lauren Frasca] says: See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil ... about the obnoxious bouncers and strict velvet-roped lounges that generally populate the Meatpacking District. At Brass Monkey, bar- hoppers can finally grab a drink and a seat without first proving their worthiness by nature of low body fat, high-limit credit card and/or a swanky pair of Prada shoes. Of course, the question remains: At $5 a beer, are there enough Little West 12th revelers interested in the relaxed pub scene to keep the doors open?

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: POM WONDERFUL, A new juice on the loose
2004
[Aleatra Rodriguez] says: Pom is enjoyable and super-good for you, but it's definitely not the most refreshing juice I've ever tasted. Reminiscent of unsweetened grape juice or a sort of cran-grape hybrid, the flavor is tart but different and interesting in that pomegranate way. Pretty heavy in a glass by itself, this juice turned me into a veritable mixologist. I found it works great in lieu of cranberry in vodka-based cocktails and adding a good splash to a glass of something fizzy - seltzer, champagne, 7-Up. I like to think of it as juice with potential. While I like pomegranates in fruit form, the Pom juice experience for me was a bitter one. Far from the \"refreshing\" and \"delicious\" drink it's advertised to be, I liken Pom to a heavily concentrated cranberry juice that's tough to take even when thoroughly chilled. After three consecutive days of forcing myself to drink it, thinking it was perhaps an acquired taste (it's not), I consumed less than one-third of a 15-ounce bottle before tossing it down the drain.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: ODEA, A candlelit ode to hipsters
2004
[Scott Silvestro] says: [ODEA] is a nice candlelit lounge with fun music. But the problem is there's little to define it from any other city lounge. The crowd was a tad pretentious and the bar was a little hard to get to. If you're in the neighborhood and you want somewhere to go, then Odea is fine - otherwise, no need to make a special trip. A trendy spot in Little Italy. The tapas plates are delicious, with a capital \"D,\" but pricey. There are some nice booths that are good for chilling with a couple of friends while the DJ spins some hot mixes. Get there early if you want a booth, otherwise the place is more prime for drinking than eating, as there are few tables. Try my favorite: the mojito. Odea is definitely hot, but aren't tapas a Spanish thing? Ouefa!!

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: THE DELANCEY, The view from the top
2004
[Linda Harel] says: Every shaggy-haired young hipster in the city seemed to be crammed onto the main floor of The Delancey, socializing over loud indie music, on Saturday night. I wouldn't recommend it for the agoraphobic, but if you don't mind being smooshed against the people you're with, it's a fun place to get your weekly dose of mingling done. And if you have $10 to spare, the weather is nice and you don't mind pushing through people to get to the stairs, wait in line to get up to the roof garden, where you can drink among palm trees and goldfish. Wow! The Delancey is my new favorite lower- Manhattan spot. Great vibe, fun music, cool people and a fabulous view. A convergence of village hipsters, casual drinkers and Manhattan party hoppers makes this crowd a lot of fun. The view from the rooftop is worth the squeeze - and if there is good weather, you will never want to leave. The music varies as much as the fashion palette. You can really wear whatever you want, and you will hear a variety of sounds, from the DJ to the live music. Go there after work for a drink with friends and co-workers - the club opens at 5 p.m. Or hit up the bar after hours, 'cause it's open until 4 a.m.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: FAVORITE HOT SPOTS, All of the town's A clubs
2004
[Crobar] is the definition of a night out in the big city. It's got everything you need: celebrity DJs, a cool scene, a great location and you never know who you are going to see there. The dance floor is huge and if you get tired, there is space upstairs to relax. Crobar is pretty popular and the lines can get long. Some people say that the door policy is a little tough, but if you are a talker you won't have any problems. Besides, they have to be a little tough at the door - it adds to the New York flavor. 6s and 8s, 205 Chrystie St., Manhattan; 212-477- 6688. The fact that it's an LES rock dive (marked \"205 Bar\" at the entrance) somehow makes it glam. What's so great is that it's like a seedy casino room, ripe for drama. Late night, it's brimming with hipsters who double-fist top shelf mixers and PBR from a blackjack table- turned-bar. It's so money. 1) CROBAR PHOTO - Crobar can be part of a perfect New York evening. IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: QUO, Fashionable fun-seekers
2004
[Jeralyn Gerba] says: The existing state of Quo is probably unfairly surmised, given that midsummer crowds here in the city bear no resemblance to the rest of the year. Nevertheless, the newish nightspot in Chelsea managed to entice loads of dressed-up frat boys and ex-cheerleaders on a recent weekend. Sharing the crowd with the rest of the megaclubs on the block (Crobar, Spirit and Marquee) gives it a dull clubbing feel, though the music is excellent, and the vibe's not as desperate. Go before the weekend hits - the status is much more vibrant and lively. IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: SEVENTEEN HOME, It's not your living room
2004
Seventeen Home is a good place to hang out when you're feeling chatty. A DJ in the corner spins background music just loud enough to notice without having to shout your conversation. It's a trendy little venue but not hipstery enough to scare anyone away. The candlelit main room is incense-scented, the couches are comfortable, and people wear jeans and look laid-back. IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: BLVD, A big space for big spenders
2004
[Jesse Giles] says: BLVD is the hot new spot in lower Manhattan. The decor is high-class trendy, and there's plenty of lounge space to test your \"chat 'em up\" skills. What I liked the most was that the crowd was not afraid to dance. The DJ had some hot mixes, and the dance floor filled up pretty quickly. The only problem is that BLVD feels like every other city hot spot: Long lines, trendy people - and, of course, it wouldn't be New York without expensive everything.

IMPULSE!, YOUR REVIEWS: PLAN B, An eclectic alternative
2004
After an hour spent listening to Plan B's predictable music, fighting for its bartenders' careless attention and having my toes stepped on by gyrating hipsters in stiletto heels, I felt like lighting a funeral pyre in the building's basement to mourn Drinkland - a favorite haunt that used to occupy Plan B's space. Like botched plastic surgery, Plan B possesses all of the same elements as its predecessor, but somehow during its \"makeover,\" they were not put together quite right. YOUR REVIEWS: APT, It makes you feel at home
2004
APT has no sense of vibe; you'll think you're going to a business meeting, the way you're greeted. The decor is black on black on top of black. When calling for reservations, be clear on the type of event you're attending. I was quickly told that I would not be interested in attending its gay party. So, judgmental APT happens to be. When entering APT, you have the option of getting a table or strolling around the apartment- styled lounge. The decor makes you feel like you're in somebody's apartment, with couches and even a bed to relax on - if you decline table service. A small outdoor area caters to cell phones and cigarettes, the upstairs to the more relaxed chillin' crowd and the downstairs aims to please the more urban hipsters. A very mixed crowd offers an urban clash that makes for some interesting eye candy.
