Distance Teaching in Higher Education

In Algeria, higher education has gone online under the 19-Covid pandemic since 2019. However, after a five-year experience with remote digital learning student outcomes are far below standards of achievement. This article presents the results of a quasi-experimental study conducted in 2023 after five academic years of experience with distance teaching. It compares the effects of both onsite and online teaching of a content-based English course (Cognitive Psychology) on students' achievement and motivation. The study involved 249 undergraduate third-year English students and three teachers of Cognitive Psychology from the Department of English, Algiers 2 University. A mixed method was used in the study, the first consists of a post-test design that compares two semestrial exams' scores through a t-test (SPSS 27), and the second is a questionnaire administered to teachers and students. The findings indicate that while most students view online teaching favorably they and most of the teachers recognize that conventional classroom learning is more likely to trigger their motivation in the process of learning/teaching and more effective in enhancing learning quality than digital distance learning; however, the paired samples t-test revealed no significant difference between the two teaching modes in terms of students' achievement with a strong correlation between the scores in the two semesters' exams and a negligible size effect. Besides, results indicate a low achievement of students following the two instructional formats which informs that students took no advantage of the flexibility they were offered in a hybrid environment. The findings imply that the teaching mode cannot impact.

The Role of English Language Teachers in Employing Distance Education Skills to Enhance Interactive Learning

The research aims to identify the role of English language teachers in employing distance education skills to enhance interactive learning by determining the distance education skills required for English language teachers and how they can employ these skills in promoting interactive learning. The importance of the research stems from the need to improve the quality of education in the field of English language teaching by developing teachers' technological skills and knowledge. Research findings may also contribute to the design of more effective training programs that respond to the technological needs of teachers. This study conducts a comprehensive literature review to explore the role of English language teachers in using distance education skills for interactive learning. It analyzes scientific articles, books, and reports from peer-reviewed sources. Relevant literature was identified through keyword searches in academic databases like PubMed, ERIC, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. The study on distance education has several important implications for the country's education system, teachers, educational institutions, and policymakers. The results of the research assured that distance education requires the existence of an infrastructure of computers, phones and tested and approved software in education, as well as the purchase of special programs for schools to ensure the participation of the largest number of students in distance education, in addition to the concerted efforts of government and private authorities that interact with the changes, and exceptional and emergency circumstances in their decisions to ensure overcoming the crisis. In conclusion, the research confirmed the need to build a comprehensive strategy for distance education at all educational levels and work on updating it continuously while creating the necessary technological infrastructure, measuring the impact and results of the application of distance education platforms, and evaluating their technical and educational quality.

This study aimed at determining the perceptions of distance learning students of the availability, accessibility, usefulness and influence of instructional technologies for acquiring pedagogic experience at Ogbomoso, Osogbo and Ilorin, Nigeria. The study was descriptive of cross-sectional survey type and used a researchers-designed questionnaire to collect data. A total of 397 undergraduate students were randomly sampled from six faculties in the sampled study centers. Four research questions were raised, answered and analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. The results showed that instructional technologies were not sufficiently available and accessible to the students at study centers for the acquisition of pedagogic experiences. The findings revealed that students displayed a good level of interest in experiential learning using the available instructional technologies due to a high perception of usefulness of instructional technologies for learning. However, inadequacy of the instructional technologies was a constraint towards access and adequacy of their utilization by the students. It was recommended that government and non-governmental organizations should work to procure adequate instructional technologies that would facilitate easy access to pedagogical experiences.

This study aims to sightsee students' perceptions of how online lec-tures should be through exploring factors that increase students' motivation to attend live zoom classes. A quantitative approach was used to achieve the purpose of the study. The data was collected through an electronic questionnaire using Google forms to explore students' attitudes and per-spectives on influencing their attendance to online learning sessions. Five hundred eighty-five participants (154 males and 431 females) in the study made the decision to answer the questionnaire electronically via Google Drive. The study participants were undergraduate students from two uni-versities located north of the West Bank-Palestine. The findings revealed various factors, which may affect students' motivation to attend online lec-tures. These factors are; instructional and pedagogical practices, synchro-nous classroom management, technology characteristics, and continuity to attend online classes. Further research is recommended to validate the tool researchers found to build a model describing the relationship among these factors and predict the learners' motivation.

الظروف الصعبة التي صارت جزءا من حياتنا هذه الأيام، ومنها انتشار الأوبئة، والجريمة، والظروف السيئة في كثير من المدارس، والعيش ي بلاد ذات ثقافات مختلفة، وغير ذلك، كلها من الأسباب الدافعة للبحث عن طرائق أخرى للتعليم، ومنها التعليم المنزلي، ولا ننسى أن أول الأشياء التي يتعلمها الطفل، وغالبا أهم الأشياء، هي التي يتعلمها ف البيت، مثل المشي والكلام، واللغة والمعتقدات الدينية، كما أن بعض أشهر الشخصيات في التاريخ تعلمت في البيت، وهذه الطريقة شائعة في أمريكا وكندا وأوروبا، ودول أخرى، وتتم بالتنسيق مع إدارة التربية والمدرسة، وهي مغطاة بشكل قانوني، حيث يدرس الطالب في البيت، سواء يقوم الأهل بذلك، أو من خلال التعليم الإلكتروني، ويقدم امتحانات، سواء في المدرسة أو من خلال الإنترنت.
