Night spots hope to build on a synergy downtown
2005
While customers can get sleek, modern style at The Boiler Room, Charlie Jewell's and the Rama Garden's Martini Bar, others revel in heavy wood tones that create a rustic, traditional environment. And today, in downtown's historic buildings, customers are as likely to chill out with bands, comedians and open-mike sessions as they are to shoot pool. Studies by local economist John Husing indicate that the total spendable income for the Redlands market area which also includes Yucaipa, Highland, Loma Linda, Beaumont, Mentone, Calimesa and Cherry Valley was $5.3 billion in 2004, just short of the $5.8 billion market in the city of Riverside. The spendable income in Redlands alone was estimated at $2 billion. The historic Cope Building, on Citrus Avenue between Orange Street and Fifth Street, has seen the collapse of two bars Studio 19 and Brickhouse Brewery as well as the Christian coffeehouse The Upper Room and the Mexican restaurant Irene's, which featured bands, DJs and dancing.

MacLean, Don
2005
Most buyers were local, from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, and many were first-time purchasers, as suggested by the price, she said. Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean said the commercial village and other homes are planned for that location, south of Fraser Industrial Way and next to Bonson Road, and waiting for test results is the only holdup. MacLean said he talked to a few people who lined up for the sale. Some said they were buying because of the prices and some said they like Pitt Meadows and saw it as a safe community.

Ladies' choices
2006
Robinson and [Alpana Singh] were wine lovers who sought jobs in the business and became accredited sommeliers (at New York's Windows and the World and Chicago's Everest, respectively) and eventually celebrity experts. [Natalie MacLean] was a former high-tech marketer who decided to turn her love of the grape into writing and a Web site. Instead, Robinson has rewritten the genre for the new millennium. It's reality-based on ratings from her Web site fans: The wines are familiar or can be found in supermarkets and mainstream wine lists (Each wine gets a \"Kitchen Survivor\" grade: fridge for whites and counter for reds). The lengthy appendix proposes wines for every personal and holiday occasion except a divorce party. Singh's happy pragmatism admits to differences of the sexes, and their wine preferences. On Mars, guys look for big reds and big numbers, wine gets overthought, and overwrought with performance anxiety. Venusians like pinot grigio and shiraz, and are swayed by stories about the winery and winemakers.
