Relive endless summer surfing the world over
Beloved by locals and foreign surfers alike, Black's Beach is \"one of the best reef breaks\" and receives an abundance of wave swell, [Rob Barber] says. But, he warns, \"this is a nudist beach -- so be prepared!\" In the winter, when nearby Big Bear and Mammoth mountains are snowy, it's possible to surf and snowboard the same day. Surfing in Europe might seem an oxymoron to many but with a wet suit, Barber says, it's a great destination year-round. The deep- water trench in this bay helps build waves recorded with faces as high as 15 metres. And what could be a better break than hanging 10 in such \"dream surf locations\" as Biarritz, Hossegor and Lacanau, then living it up in town? Making waves with bodyboarding's best
Mr [Rob Barber] has run his own bodyboarding school in Newquay, Cornwall, for the past decade and has a team of competition- winning title holders from around the globe coaching his lessons. The conditions were perfect for people like Rhona Gardiner, from Newquay, who was learning to bodyboard for the first time. She said: \"I usually surf but I have been meaning to try bodyboarding for ages. It was so much fun and a good workout, I ached for days after giving it a go. My group was being taught by Lisa Cutts, who was the former Welsh, British and European women's bodyboard champion. She made even the trickiest move seem easy, it was great to watch.\" The English Surfing Federation (ESF) pro clinics have now finished for the summer, but the ESF surf school and Rob Barber's bodyboarding clinic are open all year.
Double drowning brings warning on surfboard risk
In the past few years bodyboarding has boomed, with holidaymakers attracted to a cheaper and easier, but equally exciting, version of surfing. In the latest incident, the 50-year-old and his son, 21, were trapped in a rip tide, washed out to sea and killed while the mother waited at a nearby holiday camp. The two men, who were staying at the Trevornick Holiday Park, Newquay, had gone down to Holywell Bay to bodysurf on Thursday evening. They got into trouble and drowned only minutes after lifeguards, who police the beach until 6pm, had left. Locals said the true tragedy of the accident was that the rip tide that caught the holidaymakers could easily have been escaped with the right knowledge. \"The conditions weren't treacherous. A simple tip could have saved their lives,\" said Rob Barber, the coach to Britain's bodyboarding and surfing teams.
Officer tells inquest he thought he would die at hands of knife- wielding man
\"It was Day 10 of my career and I thought that I didn't want it to end now,\" [Matt Harty] said, describing how he went for his gun as fellow officers shot Wai, first with rubber bullets from an Arwen gun and then with a pistol. Sgt. Doug Hufsmith fired two rapid fire rounds, rubber bullets from the Arwen gun. [Rob Barber] said the rubber bullets hit Wai in the chest but \"ricocheted off, pinging and bouncing off down the hallway.\"
Barber leads Pacific's 10-6 rout of Rebels
Rob Barber led Pacific's 10-6 rout over slumping UNLV Friday night at Barnson Field. The Tigers scored three runs in both the second and third innings. In the second, the Tigers scored on a double play, and RBI singles by Barber and Traini Ruiz. Barber broke the game open in the third inning with his three-run homer.
High Places cope with a sudden reverse
Fortunately, this hasn't sounded the death knell for the tour that will bring them to the Garrison on Monday night, High Places' live setup being reliant on much haphazardly wired analog gear and weird percussion instruments in addition to the dense, digitally collaged beats and whorls of disorienting sound that [Rob Barber] is confident he can rescue from his mangled computer. Good news, that, because the duo's latest album, Original Colors - the most streamlined, accessible and downright danceable record yet appended to their catalogue of tripped-out, pan-cultural electro-pop - is a whopper and threatens to translate into a truly transporting performance. [Mary Pearson]: The basic plan of High Places has always been to have a bed of ambience or atmospherics, and from there we pull melodies and rhythms that people can relate to. But we've never had any sort of rules for getting there and I think that's given us the freedom to experiment quite a bit, just creating sounds out of various things and manipulating them. That's the goal we've stuck to.
Health and safety's chop for barber's pole
The pole lets our customers know when we were open and now it has been taken away. Health Secretary Andy Burnham is our MP and he's always banging on about promoting local businesses. But how can you do that if your customers can't see if you're open?' One regular said: 'Has the council nothing better to do? Everyone thinks this is ridiculous.

New manager takes helm at Linear Technology
Change is in line for Linear Technologys semiconductor plant in Camas with the retirement of longtime manager [Victor Liang] in August. Liang has managed the Milpitas-based companys Camas plant since it opened in 1996, producing processed wafers for use in the companys integrated circuits, which are manufactured in Malaysia and Singapore. He guided the facility through two major industry downturns the dot.com bust in 2001 and now a recession that sent global semiconductor sales down 20 percent in the second quarter from a year ago. ([Rob Barber]) has had a very positive impact on the morale and culture here, said Jim Lucey, controller of Linears Camas plant, and I think were all looking forward to working with Rob to keep this plant successful.
