'Little $15 race' puts premium on effort, not results
A: \"If you're going to say, 'I'm doing a marathon,' that's lots of preparation, time, mileage -- even a half-marathon. But a 5K -- if you had to, you could go out and walk 3 miles today. It might take an hour and a half, but you could do it. But if you invested five weeks into this, you might complete it in 45 minutes. That's a goal you can set for yourself that's achievable. 'I'm going to run a marathon for my 40th, or 50th' -- why not make a commitment to run, and it doesn't have to be a marathon, but just start running and incorporate it in your life?\" A: \"I've been the director of this for about six or seven years, and we've had a beer garden since then. We had UA kids do a study in 2006, 2007, and we found people were often intimidated at a race. They thought it was all fast people. We thought, let's make it fun and inclusive so people can have a good time from start to finish. You're done, and there's food, beer, an egg toss, you take some pictures. For $15 you had a great time. Maybe you didn't run the fastest, but maybe it's your first 5K and you want to do it again. Four hours of your Saturday morning, it was a riot and now you have a good taste in your mouth about running.\"
I didn't want any fuss, says hero
\"I'm no hero,\" he said. \"She was up after the accident and helping people and it was some time before we realised she was seriously injured too,\" said Mr [Tim Bentley]. \"She thought the bus was going to blow up and she wouldn't leave me.\"
Slugger still clears barriers: Bentley takes swing at another Canadian slo-pitch crown
Back in the mid-1990s, [Tim Bentley] and his London MAS slo-pitch teammates played home run derby while scoring 62 runs in a five- inning game. Rich Durocher of Chatham is Bentley's teammate on both Preferred Building and the Henchmen. However, Durocher will miss the Canadian championship because of work commitments. TMC opening wellness center at La Encantada
Subjects include running, healthy eating for the holidays and stress relief. TMC will also host a \"Maintain Don't Gain Challenge\" for the community to encourage people to avoid gaining weight during the holidays. The Core is expected to be a site for health screenings and wellness fairs, too. \"The core means the innermost part of anything, and we think your health is the most essential part of anything,\" TMC spokeswoman Julia Strange said. \"You can't really build on anything else in life if you don't have the foundation of health and wellness.\" \"It is not intimidating,\" Strange said. \"We have come to believe that health care needs to occur not just in clinics and doctors' offices; it needs to be part of fabric of the community where we live.\"
MARS' BENTLEY GETS LIFT AT MEET TAKES AGE GROUP TITLE IN WORLD LIFTING FINALS
\"They were tough,\" said [Tim Bentley], who won the U.S. championship in May with a squat lift of 804 pounds, a bench press of 512 and a total of 1,978, all three of which are world records. \"I just got in there the day before the competition, so I had a little jet lag, so I really wasn't adjusted as well to lifting as I should have been. But I ended up getting seven of my nine lifts qualified, and that was enough.\" Bentley achieved a squat lift of 755, a bench press of 485 and a dead lift of 661 for a meet total of 1,981 pounds. Those numbers were lower than his national title lifts, he said, because upon realizing the strictness of the judges, he lowered his weights to be sure he made qualifying lifts. Bentley at one time or another held 10 powerlifting world records. Five of those remain active, including the 601-pound bench press and 2,200 total lift he put together in the 40-44 age group at the world championships back in 1988, when he won his first world title.
District man gets a lift from world championships ...
At the Las Vegas world championships, three judges were employed. As each judged a lift, he turned on a light -- the white light signified the lift a good one, the red light meant the lift was not acceptable. Contestants had to see at least two of the three lights turned white for a lift to count. Tour operators told to manage risks; NZ could become `unsafe' destination
While the incident did not occur while the tourist was engaged in an adventure tourism activity, there was a lesson in it for tour operators, said Dr [Tim Bentley], manager of the Centre for Occupational Human Factors and Ergonomics, based in Auckland and Rotorua. The rafting, jet boating, sea kayaking and all-terrain vehicle operators have finalised their own key components while off-road vehicle, eco-tourism and adventure cycling operators had drafted their components. Australian travel agent Carolyn Pike started warning clients about travelling on jetboats in New Zealand after she was injured in an accident. Ms Pike broke a leg bone when the jetboat in which she was a passenger hit a rock wall at speed in New Zealand's adventure tourism centre in Queenstown.
Tourism industry gets a safety warning
The accident didn't happen while the tourist was involved in an \"adventure\" tourism activity, but there is a lesson in it for tour operators, says Dr [Tim Bentley], manager of the Centre for Occupational Human Factors and Ergonomics, based in Auckland and Rotorua. Last November, Dr Bentley and David Chalmers, of Otago University, did a study for Massey's Centre of Tourism Research and warned that New Zealand could become known as an unsafe destination. Adventure Tourism Council chairman Greig Caigou says the council, Qualmark and the Tourism Industry Association are working to ensure other adventure sector standards are Qualmark-ready.
MAN FROM MARS GETS A POWERFUL LIFT FROM SETTING THREE WORLD MASTERS' RECORDS
[Tim Bentley], who works as senior franchise director for GNC in Pittsburgh, said his job and the access it provides to nutritional guidance and dietary supplements also has been important to his success. He takes several dietary supplements, including glucosin for his joints and the newly available intact cholostrom, which he said was used with great success by rowers on the Australian Olympicteam. It also does not hurt to swim in the right gene pool. Bentley stands 5-11 and weighs about 270-pounds. He has short arms and a squat build and, by his own admission, is built to lift weights. His 78-year old father still is an active athlete in sports such as bowling -- he weighs in at around 230 to 240-pounds. Son Tim tips stands about 6-2 and weighs 275 pounds on the Dukes' offensive line. Bentley effectively retired from competitive weightlifting after the 1988 championships because he wanted to help his son, Tim, and daughter, Megan, in their athletic careers. Megan was a standout softball player. Tim, a graduate of Central Catholic, is a guard and team captain with Duquesne University's football team.
Keeping those tourists safer
A 30-year-old Thai tourist suffered severe injuries last week at Fox Glacier after she ignored Department of Conservation warning signs and a safety barrier and was crushed by an icefall. Although the incident did not occur while the tourist was engaged in an \"adventure\" tourism activity, there is a lesson in it for tour operators, says Dr [Tim Bentley], manager of the Centre for Occupational Human Factors and Ergonomics
