Promoting the International Dissemination of Chinese Culture Through International Chinese Language Education: A Case Study of Chinese-English Idiomatic Equivalence
One major task of our improvement of China's international communication capabilities is to tell China's stories well and make China's voice heard to communicate a comprehensive, multi-dimensional view of China in the international arena. International Chinese language education bears the dual responsibility of spreading the Chinese language and promoting the Chinese culture. How to shape global narratives for telling China's stories and improve China's international communication capabilities has become an important issue that concerns international Chinese language education. Chinese idioms, which are hidden treasures of the Chinese language, can play a unique role in this regard. It is therefore necessary to review the content and methods of including idioms in international Chinese language education. In this paper, instruction in idioms is approached by making a corpus-based comparative analysis from the theoretical perspectives of equivalence, cognitive metaphor, and second language acquisition. Qualitative and quantitative methods are combined to analyze idioms to be added to the vocabulary of international Chinese language education in three dimensions: word frequency, semantic transparency, and functional equivalence. This paper aims to explore a new approach to the dissemination of Chinese culture through instruction in idioms in international Chinese language education.
The Metaphorical Interpretation of English and Chinese Body-part Idioms Based on Relevance Theory
As a special language coding way and language phenomenon, metaphor is an important form when humans use language in communication. However, metaphorical mappings are not arbitrary. They are based on our physical experience of the world around us. Idioms are the crystallization of human language and culture and play an important role in human communication. The idiomatic meaning is not simply the sum of the lexical meanings, but often the metaphorical meaning extended from the literal meaning. The paper is based on the relevance theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson (1995), adopts the methods of comparative analysis and text analysis, and takes the idioms of “body metaphor” contained in English and Chinese as the main research object to explore the following questions: 1. What is the interpretation model of the “body-part metaphors” in idioms? 2. In English and Chinese idioms, what are the similarities and differences in the use and interpretation of body-part metaphors? Firstly, the idioms of body-part metaphor are classified based on their projection types, then analyzing the projection methods of each type. Finally, through the new reasoning model guided by relevance theory to analyze the reasoning process of body-part metaphor in English and Chinese idioms, exploring the importance of cognitive context in the interpretation of body-part idioms.
A Linguacultural Analysis of Wedding Traditions and Marriage in Kazakh, English, and Chinese Paremiology
Paremiology is a branch of linguistics that studies proverbs and idioms, with their structural, semantic and pragmatic features. The purpose of the study was to distinguish ethnocultural and linguo-cognitive features inherent in Paremiology. For this purpose, the study analyzed family traditions related to weddings in Kazakh, English and Chinese Paremiology from a linguacultural perspective. The study used comparative-historical, componential, descriptive and contextual analysis methods to understand the contrastive analysis of lexical, semantic and cultural content of proverbs in Kazakh, English and Chinese. A total of 672 proverbs and sayings related to the wedding in the Kazakh (231), English (203) and Chinese (238) were examined. These proverbs were extracted from dictionaries, reference books, linguistic and ethnographic works, and scientific research studies on wedding traditions. The results of the study clarified that traditional weddings are not only a social phenomenon in Kazakh, English and Chinese cultures, but also have a deep cognitive, cultural, ethical and religious meaning. Proverbs and sayings related to weddings in three different cultures share common ethnocultural values and specific traits. Each of them reflects the worldview and lifestyle of its people. The results of the study will help to improve intercultural communication and assist foreign language learners understand national cultural features and the the deep layers of community's worldview and culture of a particular ethnic group.
A Comparative Study on Chinese and English Animals Idioms and Translation Strategies
Idiom, being an indispensable constituent of language, is the quintessence of the erudition. Every civilization has its own characteristics on the ground that there are some discrepancies in history, geography, customs, etc., among divergent sovereign states. Therefore, it is unambiguous that there subsists divergences in metaphorical objects and its implication of animal idioms among distinctive erudition. This paper attempts to compare and contrast English and Chinese animal idioms from its metaphorical objects and meanings and they can be categorized into four types. It is widely acknowledged that some animal idioms have equivalent connotations in culture. However, the majority of them have diverse implications among distinctive countries. On this basis, many exemplars are cited to make clear translation strategies of Chinese animals idioms. The author will interpose several interpretation principles a. Equivalent Translation, Reserve Image; b. Corresponding Translation, Change Image; c. Compromising Translation, Abandon Image. The author expects these translation principles will provide some constructive clues for translators. Here the author will mainly illustrate the translation strategies of idioms that have same metaphorical objects and maintain different metaphorical meanings as well as idioms of metaphorical vacancies on the basis of the comparative study on Chinese and English Animals idioms.
A Cross-cultural Comparative Analysis of Views on Friendship in Chinese and English Idioms
Through the method of contrastive analysis, this thesis aims at presenting the differences as well as similarities between friendship view in China and that in English-speaking countries by examining Chinese and English idioms from the perspective of power distance, individualism versus collectivism and long-term versus short-term orientation. A further explanation of the characteristics of the two friendship views from the perspective of culture is also made. The Study of English and Chinese Numerical Idioms and Their Translation
Numerical idioms have rich cultural connotations and are closely connected with culture. Along with the development of China's reform and opening up policy, intercultural communication tends to be wider. Contrastive studies of language-culture have become increasingly important. This article is mainly a probe into the English and Chinese numerical idioms from the perspectives of definition and cultural characteristics of English and Chinese idioms and meanwhile makes a detailed analysis of the translation of numerical idioms of both English and Chinese languages with practical and theoretical effect. It will help us with language teaching and learning, translation and intercultural communication if we have a proper understanding of the differences between both English and Chinese numerical idioms. Only by mastering the deep cultural meaning of numerical idioms can we make the translation more vivid and expressive, thus effectively improving the ability of intercultural communication. George Carter Stent (1833-1884) as a Translator of Traditional Chinese Popular Literature
George Carter Stent (1833-1884) arrived in Beijing as a soldier in the guard of the newly-opened British legation. His linguistic abilities soon attracted attention and in 1869 he joined the Maritime Customs Service. He compiled several dictionaries. In the 1870s he also published two collections of translations and adaptations of popular Chinese songs and ballads. Some of these versions were based on printed or manuscript texts then available in Beijing (many of which can be identified), while other were based on oral versions which Stent had reduced to writing by his Chinese teacher. In his translations Stent showed himself a highly talented versifier. Stent also was greatly interested in the melodies to which the songs were performed in their original Chinese versions, and transcribed some of these tunes in his first published article.
