Cody, Mike
2005
In the wake of Operation Tennessee Waltz, a federal probe of public corruption in Tennessee, Memphis attorney [Mike Cody] was appointed by Gov. Phil Bredesen to co-chair a 12-member citizens advisory panel on ethics. Cody, co-author of \"Honest Government: an Ethics Guide for Public Service,\" prosecuted public corruption cases as U.S. attorney for West Tennessee and helped clean up Tennessee's \"charity\" bingo gambling operations as state attorney general. The governor spelled out our mission in his executive order dated July 11. The panel is to conduct a comprehensive review of Tennessee's state laws and practices related to ethics. This review would include, but not be limited to, laws and rules related to lobbying activities, campaign finance, disclosure requirements and current enforcement mechanisms. All looks good for Saturday's Oktoberfest
1999
Fox River Grove resident Donna Brouder, who is coordinating the event with the help of Mike Cody, is excited because the weather forecast looks good. But, just in case, they've scheduled a rain date for Sunday. Last year, if you attended the festival, you got soaking wet. Still, the 100 or so dedicated Oktoberfesters made the event a success. This year, Brouder is hoping for a few hundred attendees. Held at Lions Park, Oktoberfest will feature German food, dancing, drinking, a puppet show and just plain fun meeting with other folks in town. It's reasonably priced, too. Admission is free, and you can eat for around $4. You'll really enjoy the food if you like German cuisine.

Cavalrymen Honored Century After Battle
1996
The eight who were killed on Sept. 18, 1879, were buried quickly after the daylong fight with Warm Springs Apache warriors led by Victorio, a fabled figure in the Indian Wars. Victorio had rebuked the Army's attempts to send the Warm Springs Apaches from their home in the Black Range to the San Carlos reservation in Arizona. At nightfall, the Apaches withdrew and the Buffalo Soldiers retreated to lick their wounds. Black regiments, serving in the Indian Wars from 1861-98, gained the name Buffalo Soldiers from Indians because the soldiers' hair looked to the Indians like buffalo fur. The troops were led by White commissioned officers.
