A school of our own : the story of the first student-run high school and a new vision for American education
\"A School of Our Own tells the remarkable story of the Independent Project, the first student-run high school in America. Founder Samuel Levin, a high school junior who had already achieved international fame for creating Project Sprout-the first farm-to-school lunch program in the United States-was frustrated with his own education and saw disaffection among his peers. In response, he lobbied for and created a new school based on a few simple ideas about what kids need from their high school experience. The school succeeded beyond anyone's wildest expectations and went on to be featured in Newsweek, NPR, and the Washington Post. Since its beginnings in 2010, the Independent Project serves as a national model for inspiring student engagement. In creating his school, Samuel collaborated with Susan Engel, the noted developmental psychologist, educator, and author-and Samuel's mother. A School of Our Own is their account of their life-changing year in education, a book that combines poignant stories, educational theory, and practical how-to advice for building new, more engaging educational environments for our children\"-- Provided by publisher.
A wider playing field
Snow Babies, Snowbunnies and Snow Villages just aren't flying off the shelves as they once did. Even the king of collectibles, the Franklin Mint, is struggling, with plans to lay off 200 workers as part of a restructuring. The company has previously marketed its collectibles and giftware through department stores and gift shops, but its new line of moderately priced collectibles called Simple Traditions will be sold by non-gift-oriented retailers such as Menards, Kohl's and Linens 'N Things.
NEWS & NOTES ; Guthrie board member breaks new ground
It's not often that you find a board member of an arts organization as funny and stage-savvy as Susan Engel, president of the Guthrie Theater board. Lowry's 1864 hymn, \"Shall We Gather at the River?\"
STUDY TAKES STOCK OF SHOPPERS' HABITS

Star Tribune, Minneapolis, Neal St. Anthony column: A takeover battle may be brewing for Lenox Group
Eden Prairie-based Lenox, the former Department 56, last year acquired Pennsylvania-based Lenox for $190 million. Department 56 then changed its name. But the retailer of collectibles and giftware products under the Department 56, Lenox, Dansk and Gorham brand names has struggled to integrate the two companies, and it posted a loss of $42.9 million on revenue of $342.3 million during the first nine months of this year. A spokeswoman for Lenox said Thursday that the board has yet to formulate a response to a proposed consulting agreement that [John Morgan] proposed Friday. The Lenox board had made no offer to acquire Morgan's shares at a premium, the spokeswoman said. This tussle pits neighbor vs. neighbor as well. Morgan and [Susan Engel], casual acquaintances, both have residences in a south Minneapolis neighborhood near Lake Harriet. Engel also has an East Coast residence and moves between Lenox and Department 56.
