2025
The study examines the career aspirations of Slovenian ninth-grade students and analyses how these are influenced by personal factors and their attitudes towards engineering professions. Regression analyses on a sample of 779 students show that interest in outdoor work is a significant predictor of engineering career aspirations across all educational levels. Physical demands positively influence aspirations for engineering occupations requiring secondary or elementary education, while intellectual demands and employment opportunities encourage interest in engineering occupations at the tertiary level. A positive perception of engineering professions as interesting is a key factor for all levels of education. The results emphasise the importance of fostering interest in technical careers. V raziskavi smo preučevali poklicne želje slovenskih devetošolcev in analizirali, kako nanje vplivajo osebni dejavniki ter njihov odnos do tehničnih poklicev.

IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS
2023
The numbers vary from source, but there are easily more than 100,000 individual professional associations in the US. Some associations serve materials scientists and engineers. Other serve cardiologists, magicians, court reporters, and any other profession that anyone can think of, including the professionals employed by professional societies. One thing at which association professionals excel is sharing best practices. An example of such collaboration is contributing to the report--an industry-wide survey conducted by Naylor Assocition Solutions. Here, Robinson shares some takeaways from this year's Naylor report.

2020
The crash of two 737 MAX passenger aircraft in late 2018 and early 2019, and subsequent grounding of the entire fleet of 737 MAX jets, turned a global spotlight on Boeing’s practices and culture. Explanations for the crashes include: design flaws within the MAX’s new flight control software system designed to prevent stalls; internal pressure to keep pace with Boeing’s chief competitor, Airbus; Boeing’s lack of transparency about the new software; and the lack of adequate monitoring of Boeing by the FAA, especially during the certification of the MAX and following the first crash. While these and other factors have been the subject of numerous government reports and investigative journalism articles, little to date has been written on the ethical significance of the accidents, in particular the ethical responsibilities of the engineers at Boeing and the FAA involved in designing and certifying the MAX. Lessons learned from this case include the need to strengthen the voice of engineers within large organizations. There is also the need for greater involvement of professional engineering societies in ethics-related activities and for broader focus on moral courage in engineering ethics education.

Letter from the Editor: Raising Awareness of Diversity and Inclusion Issues in Our Work
In the face of a global pandemic and a host of other issues, communities and individuals have faced disruptions. We are perhaps more aware that engineers are people juggling multiple roles andresponsibilities – community members, parents, and professionals. It is timely to examine our practices related to increasing the diversity of the engineering profession, and the extent to which our work benefits humanity across a spectrum of socioeconomic and cultural dimensions. IJSLE encourages authors to give community partners an opportunity to co-author manuscripts, and to include positionality statements in their papers.

NCEES Announces Option for Military Families Seeking Comity Licensure
2021
The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing professional licensure for engineers and surveyors, announced that it has added a new option to the NCEES Records program to assist military families with the comity licensure process. Active-duty military and their spouses are eligible to transmit their NCEES Record to a state licensing board at no charge when military orders require them to relocate to that state. TMS works with NCEES in developing the test employed to register professional metallurgical and materials engineers in the US.
