Student-run falls prevention programmes for older adult community members: a pilot study

IntroductionFalls among community-dwelling older adults represent a significant public health concern. A student-led falls prevention initiative was piloted with a group of at-risk clients in Hamilton/Waikato, New Zealand.AimThe aim of this study was to evaluate a student-led falls prevention programme from the perspective of a group of initial clients. The programme comprises two key components: strength and balance exercises, and sessions providing falls prevention education (FPE) from the perspective of a group of initial clients.MethodsData on perceived effectiveness and overall impact were collected via a post-programme survey.ResultsParticipants reported positive perceptions of the programme’s effectiveness in enhancing knowledge and preventing falls. Qualitative data revealed multifaceted benefits experienced by participants, indicating the potential efficacy of student-led initiatives in reducing falls among older adults.DiscussionThese initial findings underscore the potential of student-led initiatives in addressing falls prevention and enhancing the wellbeing and safety of aging populations. Further research is warranted to explore the scalability and sustainability of such programmes in broader community settings.

The benefits of a novel chicken-based oral nutritional supplement for older adults: A double-blind randomized controlled trial

Background and Objectives: A considerable proportion of older adults are lactose intolerant. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical safety, efficacy, and tolerability of a chicken-based oral nutritional supplement (ONS).
Methods and Study Design: Double-blind randomized controlled trial. Subjects in the intervention group received chicken-based ONS, and those in the control group received a similarly flavored oral fluid placebo. All subjects were followed-up every two months for a total of 6 months.
Results: Thirty-eight older adults aged >/= 70 years were recruited. The mean age and BMI were 81.5+/-5.6 years and 19.6 +/- 2.5 kg/m2. At the end of this trial, there was no statistically significant change in sarcopenia-related variables in the intervention group. However, the higher-level physical activity (PA) group within the intervention group had a significantly improved usual gait speed (UGS) compared to the lower-level PA group (p=0.04). The adjusted mean differences in UGS between the high and low level PA groups in the intervention and placebo groups were 0.149 m/sec and 0.083 m/sec, respectively. Significant difference was observed for changes in two bone markers between the intervention and placebo groups.
Conclusions: The chicken-based ONS evaluated in this study was well-tolerated. No improvement of sarcopenia-related components was shown by the study ONS. Up to nearly an 80% increase in adjusted mean difference in UGS between the high and low level PA groups was observed in the nutritional intervention group compared to the zero-protein calorie placebo group. Significant improvement in age-related bone resorption was the earliest advantage of taking our ONS.

Outdoor physical activity for older people - the senior exercise park: Current research, challenges and future directions

Issue addressed: Exercising outdoors provide beneficial effect on mental and physical health for all ages. However, few older people exercise outdoors other than walking. While outdoor gyms have become increasingly common in Australia, limited outdoor exercise equipment specifically designed for older people is available in public spaces. We have set up and evaluated a unique purpose-built outdoor exercise park for older people in the community setting and demonstrated positive physical and wellbeing outcomes associated with the provision of this unique exercise mode and social program.
Methods: This study is a reflective narrative describing this innovative exercise approach and reports challenges associated with establishment of the exercise park, conducting the randomised trial, strategies adopted to address these challenges and recommendations for future implementation of this approach in the community.
Results: Many challenges were encountered, including securing appropriate land to locate the exercise park, control of environmental factors for safety (non-slippery ground and equipment) as well as logistics in running the exercise program itself. Several adjustments in the equipment were also required to ensure safe use by older people.
Conclusion: The inclusion of outdoor equipment for older people in public spaces or urban parks is important and careful consideration needs to be taken by local/public authorities to provide access, amenities and safety for all as well as activities to suit all ages.
So what?: Seniors' exercise parks can be installed in public places and may provide an enjoyable and effective approach to engage older individuals in a more active and healthier lifestyle.
