Consumers win in battle among lenders for mortgage loans
by
Delean, Paul
in
Fournier, Pierre
2004
Small wonder that brokers now account for more than 15 per cent of all new mortgage business in Canada. and 25 per cent of all mortgage transactions in Quebec, up from only five per cent 10 years ago (though we're still a far cry from the U.S. usage rate of 80 per cent). ING Direct, whose posted mortgage rates generally are about one per cent below those of the large banks, was offering a no-haggling rate of 3.79 per cent Friday on a three-year fixed mortgage and 4.39 per cent on a five-year term. The best rates posted on the Multi-Prets web site (www.multi-prets.com) were 3.75 and 4.3 per cent. \"Don't fall for the old misperception that `a mortgage is a mortgage is a mortgage' and all banks are the same,\" authors Alberta Cefis and Roberta Hague write in their new book, The Truth About Mortgages (Key Porter Books). \"There are big differences, some of which can have an impact on you. Since your mortgage is likely to be the biggest financial decision you'll make, approach it well armed with accurate, current information.\"

Mortgage broker opens doors
2007
[Pierre Martel] has overseen the creation of Multi-Prets' newest division, Solutions Hypothecaires Ideal, which negotiates higher-risk (or subprime) loans for clients who might not qualify for, or want, standard mortgages. While growth of the \"subprime\" market has been depicted as a U.S. phenomenon - now backfiring because of a slump in housing prices and overextended consumer credit - it's also an emerging segment of the Canadian industry, Martel said. For Multi-Prets, it's already five per cent of its Quebec business, \"and growing.\" As quickly as it's grown, Martel said there's still plenty of potential for Multi-Prets within Canada. In the U.S., mortgage brokers handle about 80 per cent of residential mortgages, he said. In Canada, they only handle 31 per cent of these mortgages, while in Quebec, they account for 25 to 30 per cent of the total.

Catholic church to PQ: Careful what you wish for
2013
Instead of a more secular Quebec, he foresees more resistance: more protests in the street, and more women isolated at home in what he calls cultural \"ghettos.\" \"The more you try to have an identity by pushing back others, the more you create ghettos,\" [Pierre-Andre Fournier] told a news conference Thursday in Trois-Rivieres. \"It appears reasonable to us to want a secular state. Jesus did not hestitate to affirm: render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's,\" he told reporters.

PIERRE FOURNIER IS DEA AT 79; CELLIST TYPIFIED FRENCH STYLE
1986
Mr. Fournier performed in the United States for the first time in 1948 and returned to this country many times thereafter. As recently as 1983, Mr. Fournier gave a recital at Merkin Concert Hall playing works with which he had established a strong identity over a long career - the Schubert ''Arpeggione'' Sonata and sonatas by Debussy, [Bohuslav Martinu] and Chopin. John Rockwell, writing in The New York Times, observed that some of Mr. Fournier's effortless technique had slipped away but that the ''patrician'' style remained intact. Some 20 years earlier, Harold C. Schonberg described Mr. Fournier's tone in the Shostakovich E-flat Cello Concerto as ''elegant but inclined to thinness,'' adding that he had ''adopted a chamber-music approach'' to the work.

Gagliano asked to turn over basement papers
2005
[Alfonso Gagliano] testified last month that he has \"many\" boxes of documents in his basement, but on Monday his lawyer Pierre Fournier refused to produce them, claiming the commission was \"on a wild goose chase\" and a \"fishing expedition.\" Fournier said that Gagliano, as a member of Parliament, was constantly invited to various events and the letters in the archives are primarily responses to those invitations. But he acknowledged that the documents listed in an index were not there. The lawyers are wondering if these documents are gathering dust in Gagliano's basement. Fournier appeared angry at the commission's apparent unwillingness to believe Gagliano when he said last month that the basement boxes \"contain no relevant documents.\"
