Keep pushing for a permanent air ambulance, says Irwin
What AHS does promise - or seems to - is that any change won't happen without proper consultation. The lack of such consultation with communities prior to the announcement of earlier this year was a very sore point with local municipal councils. [Rob Irwin] urged whoever the new council will be to continue to push for a permanent air ambulance base in Slave Lake. Warman said he believed the new council would do that.

\"Until we decide what we're going to scrap and what we're going forward with, I don't think we can go forward with this.\" [Rob Irwin] suggested the extra money could be taken out of the 'regional transportation' item in the wildfire recovery plan. That's a $1 million item that hasn't been talked about much. Councillor Darcie Acton of the M.D. sided with her colleague [Robert Esau]: \"We're not at the point yet of reallocating anything,\" she said. \"If we push this domino over tonight, it's unstoppable.\"
Notes from the AUMA conference
[Rob Irwin] said he was \"shocked\" to hear from other municipalities of what they see as a decline in the quality of ambulance service since the provincial takeover of a couple of years ago. In particular the 'ALS', or Advanced Life Support component has diminished, to leave just Basic Life Support as the standard level of service in many cases. That contradicts with what was promised at the time of the transition (to provincial from local control), Irwin said, which was that a decline in the level of service \"wouldn' happen.\" Added councillor Mark Missal: \"We heard some communities' ambulances were being dispatched 3 1/2 hours away, leaving them without (any coverage).\" [Councillor Missal] remarked on the difference a year makes in people's reaction to the Slave Lake disaster of 2011. At last year's AUMA conference, all everybody wanted to talk about was Slave Lake, he said. This time?
Council notebook
\"They help out when they're not busy and the province reimburses us for the assistance,\" [Vance] told council. \"Last week (May 7 to 13) was very tense, so everyone is pleased to see rain,\" Vance said. [Rob Irwin] had some reservations about any breaks because there was still considerable work to be done on the recovery side, \"but (the holiday) is partly to give administration a break as well.\"
Another delinquent trailer bites the dust
The situation as explained by town director of finance Julia Seppola is that the trailer -located in the Lynnwood trailer court in northwest Slave Lake -is in arrears on taxes to the tune of over $6,000. Rent to the trailer park has also not been paid. Council voted in favour of Seppola's recommendation, with [Rob Irwin] opposed. A second motion passed with two councillors opposed. This was to move the amount owing from the trailer into an allowance for doubtful accounts. Councillor Valerie Tradewell joined Irwin in voting against the motion.
No go to mass dialing system
Calling it \"astronomical,\" councillor Rob Irwin said he could foresee a future council \"ditching it as an easy way to take care of one per cent of a tax increase.\" Irwin countered that he's familiar with the criticisms. But a siren only has to mean one thing: turn on the local radio. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to maintain it.
Councillor says provincial officials delayed evacuation
\"Here is what SRD decided, and I'll just tell you but I can't speak for their decision. The decision was to defend in place,\" said Slave Lake Councillor Rob Irwin, speaking to Slave Lake residents at Westlock Memorial Hall on Thursday, May 19. \"What SRD's concern was, if they put out a two-hour evacuation to send people out on the highway, they felt that would cause panic and put people out on the highway and we would have lost lives on the highway.\" At the Westlock Centre, Irwin said, \"Normally in an evacuation we would have the fire department knock on doors.
Quad operators need to be educated to rules, say town councillors
\"If a pedestrian or child was crossing that bridge it could have been tragic,\" [Rob Irwin] said. \"To me it is a real concern,\" said Irwin. \"What I saw in Schurter Park could have been tragic.\" \"Quads are a motor vehicle and have to obey the rules of the road,\" said Irwin.
Council not thrilled by health care letter
\"I'm disappointed,\" said councillor Rob Irwin. \"I would have thought Mrs. Calahasen could have lobbied for us. Instead we got a letter with information we've already received.\" \"You're correct,\" she said. \"There's no new information in this letter.\" \"We're in the midst of gathering information,\" said [Karina Pillay-Kinnee]. \"But councillor [Tyler Warman] is correct. We need to keep her informed.\"
Town council disappointed weir work held up
\"It's disappointing because the government put money aside to do this now,\" said Pillay-Kinnee. \"We wait for the appeal process,\" [Rob Irwin] said. \"Maybe a mayor and a couple of reeves should sit down and have a cup of coffee and talk about it (with the Sucker Creek people),\" he said.
