Extra money yields new ambulance
Councilor at large Dennis Rosa said the ambulance service has generated enough money in the past to replace emergency vehicles. The money goes straight to the general fund, however, often scooped up by other departments in need. A private ambulance company, Medstar, is always on hand to take Leominster emergency calls along with any of the city's engines and ladder trucks, which are all equipped with defibrillators and necessary medical supplies. Some city councilors are also suggesting the department increase ambulance services in the city by moving to advanced life support (ALS).
City racking up big firefighter OT bill
The department paid out about $690,000 for overtime in fiscal year 2005, and [Alfred LeBlanc] asked for another $700,000 in appropriations for this fiscal year. \"I think the trend will continue as it is. There's no way to avoid it, actually,\" LeBlanc said. \"It's cyclic. ... You go through 30-year cycles. What we're getting now is firefighters who entered in the early-to mid-1970's retiring. We'll be there for a few years until they're all replaced.\"
