Captain Griffey returned home on the Mauretania
Family folklore gets a bit of a laugh about the Belgium injury. [Horace W. Griffey] threw a grenade into a German bunker and when scurrying back to his bunker, he received an injury in the backside. Captain Griffey was with his unit in Germany on V-E Day and served with the Argyll Sutherlanders on occupational duty until November 1945 when his unit was returned to England. Remembrance Day in the Griffey household following the war always included a turkey cooked by Horace. The family remembers their father as a good cook.
Round Lake area schools Control back in local hands
\"I think it speaks highly of us that were getting this accomplished before the time frame the state set it at, which was 10 years,\" [W. Guy Finley] said Friday. \"Really, its turning (the district) back to the board and the community. And its real important,\" said District 116 Chief Executive Officer Ben Martindale, whos been reporting to the state. \"I have a lot of anxiety about the timing of this because of the states financial condition,\" he said, \"because this district is so reliant on state money. Its going to be a very, very difficult budget year next year as we prepare.\"
Round Lake nears local control
Under the state-created authority, the elected school board was removed from making any financial decisions for District 116. The school finance authority has been in charge of the districts chief executive officer, chief education officer and chief financial officer. George Lingel, a retired school business manager from Rockford whos been on the authority since its 2002 inception, said a recent audit indicates District 116 has its finances in order. The district has eliminated the once-staggering short-term debt and now has an education fund thats $25.7 million in the black. \"The state is in such a financial calamity, Im concerned about the district,\" said [Ben Martindale], who no longer would be involved at District 116 as chief executive officer if the state authority ends its oversight as expected. \"Its a major hire for this district,\" Martindale said. \"Its a real big thing.\"
Round Lake schools ready District prepares to take control back from state
\"[Ben Martindale]'s contract is for three years, and his (personal) goal is at the end of that three years he's handing it back to a regular superintendent,\" school board member W. Guy Finley said. \"I think there's an outside chance it could be before then.\" \"Quite frankly, in my mind, the easiest part is getting the district's finances ironed out. That's black and white,\" he said. \"The rest of this stuff is what Ben is going to be looking at and assessing.\" \"I think the fact that the board of education was so involved in selecting Dr. Martindale was a big step toward that,\" she said. \"We've got real good board members right now. They're very fiscally aware of what's going on. They ask all the right questions, so I would say, yes, we're ready.\"

His nephews and nieces were the lights of his life,\" Capri Nurnberg said. \"What he was most looking forward to was meeting is son.\" \"We're very saddened and never expected this type of tragedy to strike this close to home,\" [Ben Martindale] said. \"Village School has a network of support to help her or anyone else in need.\"
