COME OVER TO THE DARK SIDE
2011
\"People thought I was crazy,\" she says. \"I know it doesn't sound very nice but it is amazing. Because the room has a lot of light coming in and the walls have a shine and really reflect the light, it's not dark at all. People come round and always say: 'Wow, your house is so cool' - although I'm not sure how many of them would do it themselves.\" [Abigail Ahern] often paints the ceiling in a dark colour, as well as the walls. \"That way you get fewer boundaries,\" she says. \"If you do the floor, then the furniture just floats, and it limits the horizontals.\" For dark-hued paints Ahern rates Farrow & Ball (www.farrow-ball.com), for its depth of colour, as well as the French paint firm Ressource (www.ressource-decoration.com), which has a dark palette with a wonderful velvety effect. Farrow & Ball has four shades of black on its 132-strong colour card plus an increasingly popular charcoal grey shade - the slightly unappealingly named Downpipe - which recently moved from \"small batch\" production and into the firm's mainstream production line. A spokeswoman says the company had noticed customers were growing more adventurous in their colour choices, and seeking out dark colours - including deep, deep browns, greens and blues - in order to create \"drama and intimacy\".

Breeders' Cup race special for Wilmington man
2009
\"Racing is in our blood,\" said the Irishman earlier this week, \"so since 2001 we've invested 1 to 5 percent in about 35 horses with the [Matthew Gatsas] family of Sovereign Stable located in Manchester, N.H. We've had success with some of the 35 horses, including Charmsil, Champagne Ending, Shining Image, and Broadway Producer, but nothing like this.\" \"Just for the opportunity to be involved in such a spectacle is awesome,\" said [Christopher Ahern]. \"We went to the Breeders' Cup in 2001, when Gander was running for the Gatsas' family. It was just a thrill. We'll be in on the first day. We love our chances but there will be 14 strong contenders. They don't let you walk out there and steal $2 million dollars. Hopefully the racing gods will be with us.\" \"This is absolutely a thrill,\" said Ahern. \"I'm stunned. When Matt (Gatsas) called me from Keeneland about an hour after the Alcibiades, I was speechless, having watched the race on television from my living room with [Philomena] and my grandchild, Chloe. To be at this level, with a chance at a Breeders' Cup win, is just phenomenal.\"

Time to drop the 'brave loser' tag
2008
One of Mr [Kevin Myers]' favourite subjects is attacking the culture of republican violence which he attributes to the glorification of the 1916 Rising, yet he doesn't criticise Mr [Bertie Ahern] for re-instituting the 1916 Commemorative Parade. We have all heard about the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, where the so called 'top scientists' claim that global warming is man made and is now deemed to be a 'crisis' Today on RTE's 'Morning Ireland', Charlie Bird gave a report from Gaza. In his package, he said he had visited a localhospital but that he had not seen many patients.

Irish prime minister plans visit to NEPA
2008
\"Our dinner has become known across the country as one of the greatest St. Patrick's Day dinners,\" said Matthew Haggerty, president of the Friendly Sons. \"The prime minister's presence will add to our great tradition.\" The organization's 103rd dinner, which will be at Genetti Manor in Dickson City, will take place the day before St. Patrick's Day to accommodate Mr. [Bertie Ahern]'s itinerary, Mr. Haggerty said. The prime minister is scheduled to appear at a St. Patrick's Day celebration March 17 at the White House. \"It began before last year's (Friendly Sons) dinner,\" Mr. [Chris Carney] said Friday. \"I can't tell you how many meetings we had.\"
