Namibian paper faults government's plan to establish media council
If we take her at her word, then the door which she claimed was open to the media, has been closed with this categorical announcement (especially to those who believe in self-regulation rather than a Government-imposed initiative)! [Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah] went on to say that she was not yet ready to discuss the matter in public until she had a 'working document' in hand. Seems pretty pointless to put in place expensive measures to control the 'old' media, when people simply have to go online to get access to almost anything they want, and to be able to express themselves any which way they'd like to. So they don't necessarily need the NBC Chat Show or this newspaper's SMS pages to do so! If these rights would be curtailed, they'd quickly find expression elsewhere! So Government needs to go back to the drawing board and do its homework more thoroughly before making veiled threats about 'regulating' the media.

Namibia: Government to establish media council to \police\ ethics
\"Our Government has to implement the SADC Protocol on Culture, Information and Sport, to which it is a party,\" she said. Article 20 of the SADC Protocol stipulates that \"State Parties shall take necessary measures to ensure the freedom and independence of the media\", while Article 21, which deals with the code of ethics, says, \"State Parties shall encourage the establishment or strengthening of codes of ethics by various sectors of the media through the creation of an enabling environment for the formulation of such frameworks.\" Asked if the existing independent Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa), which has its headquarters in Windhoek, was not sufficient for public complaints, [Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah] did not answer directly, but repeated that the \"public, being the customers of the media\" required an institution to launch their complaints.

Namibian ruling party up constitution for amendments
[Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah] said the adopted resolutions included issues related to the strengthening the Party's structures, economic and social challenges such as unemployment, crime, gender inequality and many others that are affecting the country. \"Thanks to the hard work of party members using the well-established party structures,\" she said. She continued: \"Cognizant of the that fact that development is a process, the Central Committee reaffirms its earlier decision on the need to diversify the economy with emphasis in manufacturing, agriculture, aquaculture and tourism in order to expand the economy and create jobs as a way of fighting poverty.\"
