The book forger : the true story of a literary crime that fooled the world
London, 1932. Thomas James Wise is the toast of the literary establishment. A prominent collector and businessman, he is renowned on both sides of the Atlantic for unearthing the most stunning first editions and bringing them to market. Pompous and fearsome, with friends in high places, he is one of the most powerful men in the field of rare books. One night, two young booksellers - one a dishevelled former communist, the other a martini-swilling fan of detective stories - stumble upon a strange discrepancy. It will lead them to suspect Wise and his books are not all they seem. Inspired by the vogue for Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes, the pair harness the latest developments in forensic analysis to crack the case, but find its extent is greater than they ever could have imagined. By the time they are done, their investigation will have rocked the book world to its core.
Obituary: Graham Pollard: Expert in medals, coins and Cambridge life
After national service (1948-50), he returned to the museum and began his long association with the coin room. He continued working there part time while reading history at Pembroke College. From 1954, he was junior assistant keeper; in 1966, he became keeper of coins and medals; and from 1969 until 1988, he was deputy director of the museum. Under [Graham Pollard], the coin room at the Fitzwilliam became a very special place. Not only did he build up the collection with a mixture of scholarship and an eye for the beautiful and the curious, but he also made it a centre where fellow experts, dealers and collectors came together - because looking at coins and medals with him was a life-enhancing experience.
True justice
Yesterday there was an example of what Mr [Cowdery] would likely disparage as \"tabloid justice\" in this newspaper -- the report of Parramatta Bail Court Registrar Mariaelena Albu's decision to grant bail to alleged repeat child sex offender Graham Pollard. The facts are instructive. Pollard was on parole after serving two years in jail for the indecent assault if a five-year-old girl in 2003. On Saturday, he was arrested and charged with the indecent assault of an eight-year-old girl at Nowra, and unsurprisingly, police strenuously opposed bail.

He said: 'My wife and I are keen theatre-goers and like nothing better than watching a good play in Birmingham and Malvern. 'Acting on stage was always something I wanted to do but never got round to.' He will drawon his experiences of working as an extra in recent months for forthcoming British films, Lighthouse Hill and Spivs.

\"I couldn't replay the decisions in my head because I could not recall them,\" he said. \"I was so fatigued in the 90th minute it doesn't look like [Graham Poll] refereeing. \"The first couple of days after it just came back to me over and over and over again in my mind. You think you'll wake up, it's only a bad dream, but it isn't, it's reality.\" \"I told FIFA I had no heart to ref another game in this World Cup. It wasn't them sending me home, it wasn't them saying you're rubbish, go away, they supported me fully.\"
