Storm's lasting effects postpone games
Lingering snow and ice axed 10 more local games between Tuesday and today. In just less than two weeks, 26 games have succumbed to the record-setting winter storms. \"I've never seen it like this,\" said longtime Cibola boys coach Ray Rodriguez. \"I can't remember the last time we had to reschedule a game.\" Certain matchups -- for example, the Rio Rancho-La Cueva boys game, originally slated for Tuesday -- could influence seeding for the 16-team state tournament and might be treated more delicately during rescheduling. La Cueva's girls team was supposed to host Rio Rancho on Dec. 21, but the game was snowed out. Bears coach Greg Berger rejected a proposal to play the game at Rio Rancho Mid High.

2005
Trustee Ray Rodriguez suggested using some of the money to address what he views as urgent needs, such as hiring a crisis counselor on a pay-per-service basis or bringing extra monitors to Newark Memorial High School to ensure campus safety. Both [Nancy Thomas] and school board member Jan Crocker said they would not oppose having an emergency reserve that would pay for one-time expenses, if the account were replenished in the future. They both also support using some of the money to fund capital improvements -- the initial will of voters. Staff writer Linh Tat covers Newark and Ohlone College for The Argus. 2005
After the board accepts the revised budget at tonight's meeting, Trustee Ray Rodriguez wants to discuss the possible hiring of a crisis counselor. It is unclear whether an additional counselor would have prevented Lualemaga from committing suicide, Rodriguez said, but \"more service is better than less.\" Unlike other districts strapped for cash, Newark has the money to pay for an extra counselor or after-school program, so the decision should be a no-brainer, Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez, Ray
2005
[Ray Rodriguez] said he felt slighted during the meeting when Trustee Janice Schaefer suggested he was digressing from the topic at hand and President Nancy Thomas reacted by asking trustees to vote immediately on the budget. Board members unanimously approved a $53.6 million budget for the 2005-06 school year. Rodriguez complained that the board did not allow him to finish expressing his views on the Measure A fund. He added that he would not approve the shared purpose document because board members, by keeping excess money in the bank and not funding current needs, were not practicing what they preached.

Ray Rodriguez: City Player Of the Year / Donnie's Number, Different Stats
2001
It was [Ray Rodriguez]'s arm, which mixed 90-mph fastballs, sweeping curves and slippery sliders with considerable success, that helped Tottenville win the 2001 PSAL championship. The Pirates (29-0) beat Monroe, 3-2, at Shea on June 8 to win their fourth crown in seven years. This time, Rodriguez focused on nothing but the catcher's mitt and showed the kind of stuff that had major-league scouts heading to Tottenville during the season. He went the full nine innings in the victory over Monroe, giving up seven hits and finishing with nine strikeouts. \"I blocked out the fans, the yelling,\" he said. \"Last year helped me out.\"
