The National Council for Civil Liberties and the policing of interwar politics
Issues around the policing of public order and political expression are as topical today as in the past, and are likely to remain so in the future.Janet Clark explores the origins of the National Council for Civil Liberties (the precursor to Liberty) that emerged in 1934 in protest at the policing of political extremes. The book deals with police attempts to discredit the NCCL and the use of intelligence to perpetuate a view of the organisation as a front for the Communist Party. It also examines the state and police responses to this organised criticism of police powers. This book is essential.
80 years on, why fight for civil liberties goes on: Liberty's forerunner founded in wake of bloody scenes in Trafalgar Square
The signatories raised fears that a similar bloody reception was being prepared by the Metropolitan police for the next national hunger march to arrive in the capital. The letter was signed by HG Wells, Vera Brittain, Dr Edith Summerskill, Clement Atlee, Professor Harold Laski and a further nine of the most prominent supporters of the Council for Civil Liberties. They promised to \"maintain a vigilant observation\" of the treatment of the hunger marchers by acting as responsible and neutral legal observers. \"In view of the general and alarming tendency to encroachment on the liberty of the citizen, there has recently been formed a Council for Civil Liberties,\" they announced in their letter. \"Relevant and well-authenticated reports by responsible persons will be welcomed and investigated by the council,\" the letter promised. On [Ronald Kidd]'s death in 1942, [Forster] wrote a tribute to him which is carved on a plaque that still hangs in Liberty's offices: \"Passionate in his hatred of injustice, wise in judgment, fearless in action, he championed the liberties of the people in the fight that is never done,\" it reads.

Standards! Testing! And All That Jazz!: A Real Conversation
\"Dr. Weiss, we would like you to come talk with our high school English and social studies teachers about books that might appeal to our students. Michael Winerip in an article, \"Teaching and a Law That Dismisses Them,\" (New York Times, July 12, 2006), states: A final concern with the federal law is that it is so driven by state testing that there's too much time devoted to test prep, too much time spent drilling facts for survey courses, and not enough emphasis on finding something children will fall in love with for a lifetime-the Civil War, repairing engines, science research, playing the trumpet. Why not have reading groups, letting students choose books to match their different interests, abilities and needs? A Thematic Approach I've organized this presentation of good books according to themes, suggested topics worthy of consideration.

Newport man killed when struck by pickup
The U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization has deported to Mexico 64 illegal aliens who were arrested Monday at a Morristown produce firm, according to INS Agent Ronald Kidd. Kidd said 96 people were arrested during the raid on Burnett Produce Co.'s chicken processing plant, and one of the plant's supervisors, Refugio Rea, 28, has been charged with producing, transferring or selling counterfeit documents. Federal agents conducted a similar raid on Burnett Produce in 1993. Kidd said Monday's raid was promted by \"numerous complaints\" from local citizens that many of the persons deported following the 1993 raid were back in the area.

On-air abuse of homosexuals ruled illegal
Sexual orientation has been added to race, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, sex, age and mental or physical disability as grounds on which abusive comments cannot be made, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said. Ronald Kidd, a Toronto man who filed the initial complaint that led to the ruling, welcomed the news but said homosexuals would have to keep an eye on how the CRTC interprets any future abusive comments. Many comments could be abusive but not directly mention homosexuals, for example, he said. Kidd complained to the CRTC two years ago after watching an episode of Fatima: The Moment Has Come on CHCH-TV Hamilton. Vision TV, the religious specialty cable channel, also carried the show which said AIDS is a punishment from God and that sacred scriptures say homosexuality is a crime that calls to heaven for vengeance.
