I DJ, therefore I am: Floating Points on musical experiments and marathon sets
2015
Still, [Sam Shepherd] finds it frustrating that he is often made out to be some sort of techno Einstein. \"The worst question I get asked is the one where people try and draw a parallel between science and music,\" he groans. \"It is possible that the two exist exclusively of each other, but apparently that's not a good enough answer.\" As a young boy, Shepherd was a chorister at Manchester Cathedral and went on to study piano at Chetham's School of Music. His father is a vicar and the family vicarage turned into a studio for musical experiments: \"I could set up cellos in the kitchen, drum kits in my sister's room,\" he says mischievously. A teacher gave him some jazz records and it was then that he \"stopped thinking of classical and jazz as two different things\", and started seeing them harmoniously. \" Kenny Wheeler is so beautiful that [his music] could have been Rachmaninov,\" he enthuses. \"And Bill Evans is similar to the colourfulness of Debussy.\" All of which, to be honest, is starting to sound a bit rollneck jumper. But Shepherd winces at the idea of anyone using the word \"jazzy\" to describe his music, as if it could be found on the kind of compilation that would've played in a hotel lobby in 1998. \"It's very sad to be misunderstood. You can press play and have prejudices about what jazz is or isn't, but I like to imagine I make music that doesn't require the listener to have any prior knowledge or reference points.\" After all, he adds, \"what kind of boring music is that?\" Elaenia is anything but boring; even in its chaos, it is beautiful. It builds like a hypnotic DJ set -- a soothing balm after a hard day in the office; a respite from a packed train full of screaming children where you can't sit down. Some people are angry Shepherd hasn't made Floating Points: The Bangerz album, he says, but he hopes they will find Elaenia \"inviting in some way\" in spite of that. \"I would like to feel that a person walks into an empty room and that, through listening to the record, the room is built for them without trying to push them out at any point,\" he explains. \"I'm trying to draw people in.\"

Model railroads on display at club
2008
Adding that he liked the mountains best, [Drew Seegers] stopped to listen to Jim Yarnell and Mike Zitzmann, two of the three engineers running the trains. They explained that the club chose the name \"Chesapeake and Allegheny Railroad\" for the layout because it \"represents Maryland in miniature.\" In the layout, original buildings such as Baltimore's American Brewery have been authentically reproduced. Mr. [Sam Shepherd] traveled to the city with founding member Logan Holtgrew to photograph some of its most important structures. Afterward, they built scaled reproductions of them. Members have occasionally strayed from their emphasis on local scenes, allowing their imaginations to soar. They've reproduced buildings they discovered in other cities. Mr. Shepherd's favorite is a replica of Pittsburgh's American Sanitary Feather Company.

Advertising becomes art
2006
The closest pieces resembling his paintings are the sculptures Parts and Space Trash. Parts could have been painted in a similar fashion to his two dimensional works and he admits to putting additional paint on the cardboard sculpture every time it is shown. Space Trash and Windsor meets Victoria are made up of recycled street signs. It is interesting that [Sam Shepherd] makes works out of the signs as well as making paintings that are inspired by signs. Windsor meets Victoria is a sprawling piece that needs its own space.

Shepherd, Jacobs deny Grayslake a win
A slight limp was evident as [Sam Shepherd] accepted congratulations from his [Jacobs] teammates. Shepherd (23 carries, 243 yards) scored from 11 yards out to give Jacobs a 7-0 lead 41 seconds before halftime. Neither side could score again until Shepherd's long TD three plays into the final period opened the floodgates. [Joe Saxton] delivered a crushing sack on Grayslake's next possession and Kyle Cook recovered a fumbled snap on the next play. Joel Mackintosh (13-for-75 rushing) scored from the 9 with 1:42 remaining.

Ten things we learned at RBMA
2014
1 There is no traditional route into music. Floating Points - aka Sam Shepherd - talked openly about going into a studio with engineers and \"pretending I know what I'm doing but having no idea\". Experimenting with sounds, techniques and microphones might be the long way round, and it earns plenty of side-eye from more technically minded peers, but in Shepherd's case it has delivered rich results. Also, his move into electronica and dance music came after he initially studied classical and jazz, a creative arc that is often reversed. Although he claims he's \"not very technical\" he has collaborated with gear company Isonoe on the two-channel mixer, which has no slide faders and instead uses all-rotary pots. Shepherd likens the control over the sound on that mixer to that of a gas flame on a cooker. You can hear it in action at East London's Plastic People, and Isonoe has plans to sell the units. There is also Jah Shaka's assertion, backed up by some unnamed \"professors from Cambridge\", that \"bass helps the bowels of the body\" and is \"good for your digestive system\". We're not qualified to disagree.
